Khansaa's Work 5/3/13

Green Backed Spider

The Green Backed Spider is a rare and unique species of spider, which has many unusual features. Unfortunately, they are endangered and very close to extinction.

Habitat

Living high up in the canopy of the Pandora tree, in the Amazon rainforest, this amazing creature is able to adapt the colour of its back to suit the     colour of the leaves on the tree. In March each year, the Green Backed Spider comes down from the canopy and digs a burrow underground to lay its eggs. For a month it waits until the eggs are hatched.

 Diet

This astonishing creature creates a green, sticky web. When insects fly on to the thick web, they are caught in it and the spider eats the insects

As a light snack. Green Backed Spider are omnivores as they eat insects and leaves. Green leaves from the Pandora trees give them the green colour when they eat them. Its main source is Gekos and other small lizards, which they have once a week. Male spiders are eaten by the females after mating.

Appearance

As the Green Backed Spider is approximately the size of a human hand with legs 15cm long, it is the largest species of spider ever known. Re – tractable claws come out of its legs to provide grip, enabling it to return after breeding. This unique creature camouflages in the leaves of the Pandora tree as it changes colour to match the leaves in the tree.

If the Green Backed Spider ever becomes extinct, it would be a tragedy as they are amazing creatures.
